About Us
Hougang Care Centre, a community service of the Singapore Anglican Community Services, provides psychiatric rehabilitation services to persons with mental illness. We offer residential care and day care programmes. The focus of our work is to assist persons with psychiatric disability towards recovery by preparing them for community reintegration, and acquisition of daily living and work skills, thereby improving their quality of life. We cater for 178 residents and 30 day care members.
Hougang Care Centre is CARF accredited since 2009. By achieving accreditation, we had demonstrated that it meets international standards for quality and it is committed to pursuing excellence.
Our Mission
In support of the vision of Singapore Anglican Community Services to reach out to people in need, Hougang Care Centre reaches out to persons with psychiatric disabilities, based on principles and practices of psychiatric rehabilitation, using the psychosocial clubhouse model.
The objective is to provide a holistic rehabilitation, to prepare them for the community re-integration in roles of their choice.
The Clubhouse Model
Hougang Care Centre is based on the Clubhouse model of psycho-social rehabilitation. This model focuses on the strengths of persons with mental illness. It holds that everyone can be productive in his or her own way, and that participating in meaningful work has a regenerative effect. It offers opportunities for members to engage in meaningful activities that will help to develop life, work, and social skills through their involvement in the running of the Clubhouse. Clients are called 'members' to emphasise a sense of inclusion and mutual acceptance, and are expected to work side-by-side with staff in their own recovery process.
A work-ordered day dictates the running of the Clubhouse. For five days a week, staff and members work side-by-side in the operations of the Clubhouse. These units include clerical and membership, cafeteria and kitchen, vocational and educational services, housekeeping and maintenance.
Clubhouse Units
- Education Unit
Interested members are given the opportunity to receive training in computer skills and the Internet. A two-year course in office skills is available for members with an interest in administrative and clerical work. We are an ITE-approved training centre, and members taking the examination are under the same syllabus as ITE students
- Food Service Unit
Members in the Food Service unit are kept busy planning menus, preparing food, cooking, washing dishes, cleaning tables and serving food. On-the-job training takes place in the kitchen, providing valuable experience for members seeking employment in this industry.
- Employment Unit
Many members are currently employed under the Supported Employment Scheme. The unit is involved in supporting members in gainful employment, performing job placement services that involve preparing resumes, arranging for job interviews and making site visits to ensure that members are managing well at work.
- Maintenance Unit
Maintenance and housekeeping of the Clubhouse is carried out by the members in the Maintenance unit. They play a vital role in keeping the Clubhouse clean and functioning.
- Communication Unit
Members and staff are involved in the orientation of new members, helping them in adjusting to Clubhouse activities. Members take pride in keeping daily routine, carrying out simple administrative duties.
The Communication unit has an editorial team of members that puts together an in-house newsletter that keeps members up-to-date on the on-goings of the Clubhouse.
Residential and Recovery Services
Community integration is designed to help our members to optimise their personal, social, and vocational competency in order to live successfully in the community. A rehabilitation counsellor will identify the needs and desires of the member, and work together with him towards his recovery
Social and Wellness Programmes
Fitness workouts and enrichment classes on nutrition and holistic living are available for everyone.
